Covenant girls wrap up LIS title

Feb 2010
Covenant's girls wrapped up their fourth straight LIS Division II league basketball title behind a big finish in the final four minutes Saturday to take a 38-31 victory over St. Margaret's. The Eagles went on a 15-2 run to close out the game after going down by six during the fourth quarter. Kelly Crispens and Gabby Mirabelli, both of whom earned all-LIS nods on the year, finished with 12 points each. Crispens also had seven steals while Mirabelli had four assists and four steals. Emily Smethurst tallied 10 points and six rebounds while Margot Leibl finished with four points and five rebounds.

Varsity Field Hockey Wins LIS and Advances to State Finals

Nov 09
The field hockey team beat 2008 reigning league and state champions Fredericksburg Academy in the DII LIS final to bring the trophy home to Charlottesville. Though a well-matched championship, the Eagles came out strong and proved their desire to win the LIS tournament for the first time in 6 years. Fredericksburg came out strong after the Eagles first goal, but the Eagles had no intention of letting up and finished the game with a shutout score of 2-0. After beating Highland 6-0 in state quarter-finals, and Fredericksburg Academy 3-0 in state semis in Richmond the Eagles fell 1-2 in a hard-fought match to the Carlisle school in the VISAA State final game on Saturday. Seniors Kristy Leahong and Becca Hansell will be greatly missed as not only starting midfielders but also a source of encouragement, inspiration, and leadership to a young team. The fall 2010 season looks incredibly promising with 9 returning starters and plenty of young talent ready to prove themselves yet again.

"Dig Pink" Night a Success
On October 27, Covenant students and faculty all donned their pink clothes to school in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month! Later that evening, the pink theme continued in the gym for our Dig Pink volleyball game vs. St. Catherines. Fans and players wore pink to join hundreds of high schools and colleges from across the nation to support the battle against Breast Cancer. Over $160 was raised at the games to support the Side-Out Foundation, and we were honored to have our Admissions Director, Mrs. Donna Harris, a five-year breast cancer survivor, offer up our opening prayer. Many thanks to the students, parents, and players (and to St. Catherines for their support) on a job well done, to support this worthy cause.
